I totally felt hooked the first time I saw one of his movie:
"Element of crime" in 1990.
I saw it 5 times in a month or two. The water element was so grabbing and sensual and the hero's mantra: "I believe in Joy" was intoxicating.
Lars is like a good dop.
How did you first met his movies?

Fri, May 6, 2005 - 11:16 AMDogville did it for me... I was mesmerized by the issues brought up in that one. He is willing to go where few dare. I had seen Dancer in the Dark and Italian for Beginners before and enjoyed them, but it was Dogville that made me sit up and take notice of "who's directing this?"
I also love The Five Obstructions--It's beautiful, to see how a protege leads his mentor, and the beauty is in the relatedness between the two directors. Jorgen Leth takes Lars' instruction and keeps on taking it. The most punitive torture to an artist is "do whatever you want" - I got a kick out that one.
I just recently saw Element of Crime, and now I'm even more addicted than i was before. The haunting of "I believe in joy" set against the sepia-toned, water-infused messiness reminded me of Apocalypse Now. (maybe it was the horse thing) The main characters voice is mesmerizing. That's the kind of movie I can watch over and over again and always see something new.
I really like Transformer, the documentary on Von Trier, it's on the Element of Crime dvd. He's a funny duck.
I haven't been able to find Breaking the Waves yet to rent, Netflix doesn't have it....

Sun, May 8, 2005 - 3:50 PMBreaking the Waves was the first. Although, the one that's stuck with me has been his "Kingdom" mini series. Unreal. Dogville would be my 2nd favorite.
